about

The Kotharat
Based on The Hurrian Hymn (1400BC - anonymous)
Arranged by Lee Boyd Allatson
Performed by Ka Safar

The Kotharat quotes from The Hurrian Hymn and ancient Ugaritic texts, concerning ‘the skilful ones’ - the divine midwives - The Kotharat - the only Canaanite deities who appear in a group, who, in the story of Aqhat, aid the chieftain, Daniel, in the conception of a child. The Hurrian Hymn (also known as A Zaluzi to the Gods, the Hurrian Cult Hymn, or simply H.6) is an anonymous work: One of a collection of music artefacts inscribed in cuneiform on clay tablets, excavated from the Royal Palace at the ancient Amorite - Canaanite city of Ugarit in northern Syria. Dated to approximately 1400BC, this makes H6 the oldest surviving incomplete work of notated music in the world.

lyrics

For the ones that are offering to you

Prepare two offering loaves in their bowls
while I am making the sacrifice in front of it

They too have carried sacrifice toward heaven
for welfare and fortune
At the silver sword symbol to the right side of your throne
I have offered them

I will nullify the sins
without covering or denying them
I will bring them to you
in order for agreeance

The swallow-like daughters of the crescent moon
Artful to the beds of conception

You love those who come to be reconciled
I have placed them in front of you
and you take them away through this ritual

I will honour you at your footstool,
but it is Nikkal who will strengthen them
She let the married couples have children
she let them be born to their mothers

But the begetter will cry out
“She has not born any child!
Why have not I as a true wife born children for you?”
